Wharekauhau Lodge: Another treasure in paradise.

Milady A - Monday, June 06, 2016

After leaving Split Apple, we headed to the ferry, which was about to take us from the Northern Island to the South. There were some more exclusive hotel destinations ahead of us and therefore we didn’t bother at all that the ferry trip took 3 hours to cross to the other island; we were totally in a relaxing modus and enjoyed the green nature around us.

It was however the car ride, starting out of Wellington to our next hotel, which seemed to take ages. It got dark around 18h and we still had another 3 hours ride ahead of us. We drove through the darkest country roads on earth, no signs, no lights and no other cars in front, behind or around us. We were all alone on a dark spot in this wonderful country.

Around 21h, we finally arrived at the Wharekauhau Lodge in Palliser Bay, where we would stay for the next 3 nights. As it was totally dark, we had to wait until sunrise to see the place and surroundings, but were already more than impressed with the interior of the lodge.

Wharekauhau Lodge is an exclusive retreat, built as an Edwardian country mansion with antique furniture, stunning dining rooms and relaxing space, each of them with oversized fireplaces. The place totally mimics the feel of a bygone era.

We arrived late, however a private dining room was reserved for us and was … in one word: “Whauh”!
We were stunned and said to each other; this “private” kind of thing is really our cup of tea! ;-)
The dining table was set in a private space in the mansion and was larger than many living rooms I’ve seen, where the open fireplace gave everything a touch of glamour.
Gosh, I felt totally “underdressed” to dine in that room after a full day on the road.

The manager Louis was Dutch, and for the first time in weeks we could speak our own language, and enjoyed the long and very pleasant Dutch talk before dining. At the same time, the sommelier named Nicolas, came in with extreme joy and liveliness and presented us some fine champagnes and wines. It only took one word and we knew he was French.

I must say the ambiance over there was great; we switched languages constantly from French to Dutch and back to English, and the fun part was that only the two of us understood every word of the whole conversation. At that moment, we were very proud to be so multilingual! ;-)

The dinner was exquisite, and got served in a 5 course menu. After our delicious meal, we could only think about going to our room and get some sleep.

Louis guided us to our private (what else!?) cottage and as of the moment we stepped in, we were totally awake again because of the overwhelming, romantic atmosphere of the place. First of all, the fireplace in the room gave the cottage a cosy, warm feeling and we felt at home, once again. There was a living room, a writer’s desk, a four poster bed, a double spa bath, heated floors and soft carpeting made of rich New Zealand wool.

As of the moment, we opened the curtains after sunrise, we saw the magnificent greatness of the place as it is situated in a 5,000 acre working farm surrounded by private native forest, spectacular beaches, rivers, lakes and wetlands.

There was no better way to discover the area than by quad bike. Another first for me! What a great sensation to ride at full speed on a private (yes, again!) beach as well as through such splendid raw nature.

We visited the homestead at the estate, which is a huge house, decorated in a similar Edwardian style, reserved for families or big groups, and the place where Kate and William stayed when they visited New Zealand.

And … exactly there, in that house we did our next photoshoot!

If you want to see or read more about that, you will have to come back for more … ;-)
